Benzodiazepines for anxiety disorders: maximising the benefits and minimising the risks†
نویسنده
چکیده
The use of benzodiazepines for the treatment of anxiety disorders has long been controversial. It has divided doctors into those who emphasise problems with their use and avoid them, and those who continue to prescribe them, albeit reluctantly and even secretively. Complicating matters further, some doctors express one opinion about benzo diazepines publicly and quite the opposite view privately. Benzodiazepines are also a common reason for the rift between patients who believe that they are useful and doctors who refuse to prescribe them because of their ‘addictiveness’. This has produced confusion in both physicians and patients. The aim of this article is to provide a balanced appraisal of the role of benzodiazepines in the treatment of anxiety disorders, emphasising how to make the most of these drugs.
